Meringata al Limon, 2004
Oil on linen, 2' x 2'
August 30, 2003 10 PM, The first celebration of Labor Day with Alice and Becky, Sandra’s best friends from childhood, was the year we were married. (Our wedding was the preceding February which was also the year of the great February blizzard. We fortunately got out of New York just before the airport was closed. Alice and Becky flew up from Mississippi to be Sandra Matrons of Honor and were scheduled to depart the following day but were snowed-in and stuck in our apartment for days. Luckily the electricity did not go out and there was plenty of food in the fridge, a well stocked bar, and movies.) This painting also represents the beginning of what has become a long tradition of childhood friends, in mid-life, meeting to celebrate not only the Labor Day holiday, but also to reflect on blessings they have received in this shared friendship. The lemon meringue pie was the dessert course in what Sandra called a 'Venetian Dinner,' inspired by a meal at Harry’s Bar in Venice. In fact, the entire meal came from Harry’s Bar Cook Book, both the meal and cookbook were a wedding gift from the Arts for Transit staff. Fred May
