Happy New Year, 2004
Oil on linen, 2' x 2'
December 31, 2003, New Years Eve 2003 was one of those celebrations when two was enough. We began planning an intimate New Years Eve evening months ahead by buying tickets for an 8 PM concert at Lincoln Center. celebrating two works of George Gershwin The week between Christmas and New Years has always been a special time for us, enjoying visits with the family and friends with dinners and parties, but most of all it is a time where we take at least a week off from work to just be with one another. Much of the evening had to be planned in advance, such as a light dinner before the concert, parking at Lincoln Center, which streets to avoid in the city, the pickup of tickets and the preparation of special food and drink for midnight. That said, we allowed the evening to be a romantic experience where the events just flowed at a leisurely and enjoyable pace. This painting of that night captures glimpses of the evening filled with memorable moments shared by two who know it is important to take the time to enjoy the company of each other. The moments depicted are just after we arrived home from the concert shortly before midnight and like others tuned the TV to watch the ball drop in Times Square. You see the coffee table in front of the TV adorned with white lilies and New Year’s Eve party favors with a late night feast featuring champagne and caviar and all the fixings. Fred May
