Elijah Staley, popularly known as ‘Carolina Slim’, was a powerful blues musician who championed the Piedmont Blues of his South Carolina home. Elijah performed most frequently at the Times Square subway station with MTA Arts for Transit's Music Under New York program. When Elijah performed, there was always an audience. Although Elijah day job was for many years at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, he sang for over 20 years in the subway and has appeared in a music video for Madonna, as well as a Pepsi commercial among others. In 2002, he was featured in an article in the New York Times Magazine. Sadly, he passed away in February 2014.
