Sweet Corn, 2006
Oil on linen, 2' x 2'
July 22, 2005, Corn salad is a staple during the summer. This weekend our friends. Bill and his partner Freddie, came down to our home in southern Maryland to work on Along the Way, the book Bill and I were writing on MTA Arts for Transit (now known as Arts & Design). Much of the weekend was spent working on the book but, as usual, the evenings were reserved for festive dinners, good conversation and fresh dishes of the season. The meals are as much about the people who share the meal as the food itself, but I would be remiss if I didn’t talk about the preparation of the meals that are the visible subject for my paintings. Almost always, they are are about fresh, local ingredients. In southern Maryland most often our vegetables came from Fred's cousin Sonja's truck farm. She and her husband, Raymond, generously shared their produce making our meals about as fresh and local as you can get.
