Margaritaville, 2004
Oil on linen, 2' x2'
July 4, 2003 Natasha and Peter came for the Fourth of July weekend and during their visit the series Intimate Feasts was born. On their arrival Friday night, it was raining, so we ate in my studio that overlooked the pool. At the time, I was working on several paintings inspired by southern Maryland. The table was set for us nearby and as usual I photographed the first course before we said grace. It was in that moment that Natasha said, "this is what you should be painting" and my series Intimate Feasts was born. While almost all of the paintings from this series are from the perspective of the diner, with some of the composition determined knowing it would possibly become a painting, a documentation of this shared experience. This painting captures a more spontaneous moment, happy hour by the pool, with no thought that it would become a record of an Intimate Feast. The focus was on margaritas and dips; salsa, guacamole and onion. While they were visiting us on this holiday, we in visited them in East Hampton, where Peter had grown up and still lived in the summers. They were wonderful, happy and delicious times with the best of friends. Sandra Bloodworth
