Easter Eggs, 2006
Oil on linen, 2' x 2' March 27, 2005, Like many, we celebrate the Easter holidays as a holy day mixed with time set aside for leisure activities. Like other holiday celebrations our Easter is laced with traditions that include indulging in small pleasures such as embracing those comfort foods we had as children. It is the sharing of these traditional meals that are fixed in our memories with one another that add joy to our life together. While this Easter was celebrated in New York City, far away from where we once called home and long since the time when our families gathered at their homesteads, it was the sharing of this meal that helped build emotional strength that fills the void in our memories past. |
Easter Ham, 2006
Oil on linen, 2' x 2'
Many of the recipes for this meal were compiled from the collective memories of our surviving family members, we were not always the best stewards for maintaining the family cookbook and sometimes there were conflicts in those memories with added or lost ingredients, but to our taste we have the real recipes. To be honest traditions and family recipes evolve; family members move apart seeking their own place in life, recipes change as new ingredients and cooking methods become available, and the exact details in our memories begin to fade leaving only the joys shared.
