Harry's Rolls, 2006
Oil on linen, 2' x 2'
September 3, 2005 Sandra decided to fix an ambitious dinner using recipes out of Cipriani’s Harry’s Bar Cookbook for our Mississippi friends ,Alice, Becky, Jere and Joe Ann, during their Labor Day visit to our house which was on an old tobacco farm in southern Maryland. In February 2003 we spent our honeymoon in Venice and enjoyed a meal at Harry's Bar, a wedding gift from the staff of Arts & Design (Sandra’s day job). Most of the dishes planned for this dinner were ones we had the night we dined at Harry’s Bar. The rolls are a cross between a French croissant and a flaky dinner roll. They take all day to make but are worth the effort. To start, we served an heirloom tomato and mozzarella salad, dressed with extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar, with the Harry’s Bar rolls and butter. The exquisite sunflowers on the table were delivered from our friend Connie, a thank you for prime seats at an Allman Brothers concert at Jones Beach, The low point of the evening happened when, unfortunately, the dishwasher broke. We delayed the dinner in order to repair it. Otherwise, we would not have been able to continue the many courses with its plethora of dishes and stemware. Fred May
