The Gathering, 2006
Oil on linen, 2' x 2'
September 5, 2005, New traditions should be simple. The primary focus of all traditions should be about enjoying time together without being bogged down in details or formalities and sharing the joys of life with without the pressures of preparing for a gathering. Our Labor Day tradition started like that some time ago when we invited Sandra’s childhood friends, Becky and Alice, to our house in Maryland where we lived for the first half of that decade. Our Labor Day gatherings have evolved: Sandra and I plan the meals and table settings weeks in advance, so we can spend the maximum amount of time with our company. This painting is one of our poolside happy hours when we took the time to relax and make memories during our time together. The Labor Day weekends are not limited to Becky and Alice, as sometimes our friends Jere and JoAnn, and others join us for a meal. On this Labor Day, Becky’s brother Earl, his partner Steve, and his daughter Tori joined us for a festive celebration by the pool. Fred May
